Forres 5 Day (Grant Cup) Open Monday 29 July – Friday 2 August
Practice round Sunday 28 July. Strokeplay qualifying rounds followed by scratch, lower and higher handicap matchplay sections. Consolation rounds.
The pro shop can be contacted on 01309 672950 and entries for opens can be made via the website here.
This is the first time in the history of the competition that Forres has triumphed.
This prestigious trophy (played as an inter club foursomes event) was first played for at Balgownie in 1900. Teams from the counties of Aberdeen, Banff, Caithness, Inverness, Kincardine, Moray, Nairn, Orkney & Shetland, Ross & Cromarty and Sutherland are eligible to compete.
In what was a tough draw, Forres triumphed against some clubs that had won the cup in recent times including the previous years winners Moray. Forres defeated Peterhead 1 at the 19th and in the next round defeated Nairn 2 up. They then defeated Cruden Bay 1 up before winning their semi-final 2 up against last years winners Moray 1. In the final Forres won 4 up against Moray 2. A copy of the draw/results is available here.
Congratulations to Jeff Wright, Matty Wilson, Bryan Fotheringham and Robert McKerron for such a great achievement.
Some modifications to the rules (to help simplify and speed up play) are being introduced from 2019. Read about some of them here.
Please note that despite rumours to the contrary there are no plans at present to change the rule on playing out of a divot/pitch mark. You will still have to ‘play it as it lies’ in such situations.
One potential rule change (stroke and distance) will be down to the discretion of each local club. You may be able to drop another ball in the vicinity of where your ball was lost or went out of bounds i.e. rather than playing 3 from the tee, 4 from the same spot as your 2nd etc. This will be at the discretion of each club so check with the match secretary or members of each golf club that you play at. The number of penalty strokes will not change (2 shot penalty) but it may help prevent multiple penalty shots (i.e. 5 off the tee etc)…..
Appointments for club fitting can be reserved in the Pro Shop.
If you do not have an appointment then you can still come along and try the clubs.
Ladies and gents competitions will now be arranged for the second half of September.
Volunteers will be required to help with the hollow coring. Please inform the Pro Shop if you are available.
