Hole 1 | Cluny

The 1st is a daunting tee shot for some. The elevated tee drops some distance to the fairway but the real eye-catcher is the out-of-bounds that runs the entire length of the hole along the right hand side.

Some favour an iron off the tee for a straightforward approach. Beware of running off to the right with 2 bunkers in play off the tee. For those who avoid the risk of going right, the left has plenty hazards too with trees along the fairway edge and a greenside bunker awaiting the longer hitters.

The Braes o’ Cluny Hill

Cluny Hill rises to the right of the 1st hole at Forres Golf Club, forming part of a ridge made up of five distinct hills that gently stretch from the course toward the heart of Forres. The area is rich in natural beauty and local heritage, serving as a dramatic and picturesque backdrop to the town and nearby Grant Park—particularly during the vibrant colours of autumn.

Perched on the slope opposite the 1st Fairway is the former Cluny Hill Hydropathic Hotel, a grand 19th-century building that once welcomed visitors seeking the restorative powers of water therapy. It was the original proprietors of this hotel who commissioned the first nine-hole golf course on the surrounding land at Muiryshade — the very ground where Forres Golf Club now stands.

Cluny Hill is steeped in history, with archaeological evidence indicating settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. Recent excavations have revealed the presence of a fort at the summit, suggesting that this elevated vantage point was used for defence and observation thousands of years ago.

The hill is home to several notable landmarks, including the old town cemetery, a freshwater reservoir, and the mysterious ‘Witches’ Hole’ (also known as Helg’s Hole) — a site wrapped in local folklore. At its highest point stands the striking Nelson’s Tower, a monument erected in the early 19th century by the Forres Trafalgar Club – see Hole 18 for more information.

Today, Cluny Hill is crisscrossed by a network of well-maintained paths, welcoming walkers of all ages and abilities. It remains a cherished green space, rich in wildlife, history, and legend.

The spirit of Cluny Hill is even captured in song — The Braes o’ Cluny Hill is a well-loved local folk tune that celebrates the joyful memories and shared stories associated with this timeless part of Forres.
